The gates of hell?
Go watch “Wonders of the Solar System” Episode 4 or 5 (on YouTube). It’s NOT shopped.
Yep, it’s called “The Gates of Hell” and it’s in Turkmenistan, not Tajikistan like I originally thought (hence the title). I didn’t name it. It’s an open gas pit that no one knows how to fix (sound familiar?) so they left it burning–for the last 70 years. Swallowed the crew and town built around it in the desert.
Wrong!!! Its been burning since 1971. No one was hurt. The Derweze area is rich in natural gas. While drilling in 1971 geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 70 meters at 40°15′10″N 58°26′22″E (The Gates of Hell). To avoid poisonous gas discharge, it was decided to burn the gas. Geologists had hoped the fire would go out in a few days but it has been burning ever since. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell.
Also this photo was probably shopped. The real gates of hell is alot smaller.
